Wedding Anniversary Photoshoot

A Vintage Tennis Couple Session

For our 8th wedding anniversary, my husband and I decided to do something a little different: a vintage-style tennis photo session. Think crisp whites, wooden racquets, and that timeless “summer on the court” aesthetic. As someone who spends most of her time behind the camera, it was both exciting and nerve-wracking to step in front of it. But what surprised me the most was just how much fun we had together.

We’ve done traditional couple photos many times before, but this time felt like an actual date. Instead of stiff posing or trying to remember how to smile naturally, we got to play, laugh, and connect. The activity gave us something to do with our hands, helped us forget about the camera, and made the experience feel effortless and joyful.

It also reminded me of how powerful it can be for couples—especially those who feel a little awkward in front of the lens—to turn their photo session into an experience. Whether it’s a picnic, a hike, a game of tennis, or even cooking together, choosing an activity you love transforms your shoot from “photo session” into “date with a bonus photographer.” The genuine smiles, playful moments, and shared energy you create together are exactly what make the photos feel alive.

As a wedding photographer, I’ve always encouraged my couples to think about activities they love doing together when planning engagement or anniversary sessions. Now, after experiencing it myself, I’m even more convinced. When you’re having fun, your true connection shines through.

So, if you’re planning your own engagement or anniversary photos, consider making it an adventure. Choose something meaningful, something you enjoy. Let it be a date, not just a photoshoot. The memories will last far beyond the session, and the photos will feel as joyful and authentic as the experience itself.
